Preparing for Cataract Surgery: Eye Drop Schedule

Pre-Operative Instructions

Begin using prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops 1-3 days before your surgery, following the dosage schedule provided by your surgeon. Stop wearing contact lenses and avoid eye makeup or facial lotions. Follow any additional instructions from our team to prepare for a safe and successful procedure.

Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery continue using your eye drops as directed. Use your antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops in the morning unless told otherwise. Do not eat or drink after midnight before surgery and take only essential medications with a sip of water. Wear comfortable clothing, bring your eye drops with you, and have someone drive you to and from the surgery center.

Post-Operative Drops Schedule

Use your prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops several times a day for a few weeks to prevent infection and control inflammation. Follow your surgeon’s timetable closely—space each drop at least five minutes apart and taper doses as instructed. Continue using the drops even if your eyes feel better, and call our office if you have any concerns.

Tips for Eye Drop Use

Wash your hands before instilling drops. Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to form a small pocket. Hold the bottle close but avoid touching your eye. Gently squeeze one drop into the pocket. Close your eye gently for a minute and blot away excess fluid. Wait at least 5 minutes before applying the next medication.

What to Expect After Surgery

What to Expect After Surgery

Mild discomfort, itching or a gritty feeling and watery eyes are common after cataract surgery and should improve within a few days. Blurred or double vision may persist for a short time. Avoid rubbing your eyes, follow any shield and eye-drop instructions, and call us if you experience severe pain, vision loss, increased redness, or discharge.
